When people meet me, they think I'm driven, well-spoken, and humble. Here are five things about me that may surprise you.
1. I grew up poor
Although I was able to overcome the generations of poverty that preceded me, my childhood was not easy. I am the eldest child of three, so growing up, I was basically the third parent in my household.
2. Soccer is my therapy
Playing pick-up soccer in high school allowed me to release stress in a healthy way. I started playing at local parks in NYC at the age of 16. I know, a little late to the game, but I ended up being really good! I was recruited by club teams but my parents couldn't afford the team fee. Luckily, I was able to play and practice in college. I played NCAA D3 and practiced with the men's D3 team too!
3. I am Mexican, but I don't eat spicy food
Don't ask me why, but I just don't like spicy food. I can't handle it. Everyone makes fun of me because of course, I'm Mexican. Growing up, my mom used to make two types of food - spicy (regular) and non-spicy (for me)!
4. I financially support my parents
My parents are still living in poverty. I've been able to help them land an affordable apartment, but they still struggle financially. Since graduating college, I have been helping them with their financial needs. It took me a while to come to terms with the situation, but now, I just feel fortunate that I'm able to help them.
5. I have so many ideas, a true entrepreneur at heart
I've always said, I wish I came from money. Not because of the perks, fancy vacations, or expensive clothes - but because then I could give my ideas a chance to come to fruition. On average, every day I come up with about 3-5 ideas for a new app, a new product, or a new project I would like to take on. The problem - I don't have money to start any of these things! Perhaps in the future? Who knows! Here's to hopefully becoming the successful entrepreneur I'd one day like to become!
